Protein is needed for body maintenance and can mostly be obtained from high-quality veld. Protein is also vital for lactation
(milk production requires high protein levels), fetal development (2/3 of fetal development takes place during the last 60 days
of pregnancy) and growth. To maintain fertility and body mass, body tissue mobilised during the production cycle has to be returned in order for the fertilitu and body mass to be maintained; protein is one of the elements needed for this return to take
place successfully.
PHOSPHATE
Although phosphate levels in natural veld do not fluctuate dramatically during the year, cows’ phosphate needs change significantly depending on the stage in the production cycle. It is vital to meet their phosphate-intake needs at all stages of
the production cycle. A phosphate shortage gives way to lower feed consumption and a lower growth rate, which negatively affect fertility, milk production and weaning mass and also result in inhibited and irregular oestrus cycles.
ENERGY
Since the production cycle of a cow is constantly changing and not static, her energy needs will fluctuate continuously. She will constantly draw from or add to her energy reserves. Necessary for body maintenance, energy is also important for milk production and foetus growth. A shortage of energy leads to lower intakes, and subsequently vitality and production will suffer.
